How to Choose a Rug Repair Service in San Diego

Choosing a rug repair service in San Diego comes down to a few checks: where the work happens, whether the shop evaluates the rug before quoting, what the reviews say about repairs specifically, and whether you get a written estimate first. At Zeytounian Rugs every repair is done by hand at our own Kearny Mesa workshop.

What to Check Before You Hand Over a Rug

A repair puts your rug in someone else’s hands for a while, and unlike a cleaning, a bad repair is hard to undo. New fringe sewn crooked, a patch in the wrong wool, a binding that pulls the edge out of true. So it is worth slowing down before you pick a shop, whether that ends up being us or not. Our family has repaired San Diego rugs since 1956, and the checks below are the ones we would run on anybody, ourselves included.

Ask Where the Work Actually Happens

Some companies that advertise rug repair send the work out to a subcontractor, which adds handling, time, and a stranger you never meet. Ask directly: who holds the needle, and where? Our answer is simple. Every repair happens by hand at our workshop on Ronson Road in Kearny Mesa, done by the same two brothers who give you the estimate. You can bring a rug in during open hours and hand it to one of them at the counter. One reviewer, Greg, noticed exactly that: “After restoration and washing at their own shop… The rug came back with 100% satisfaction.”

Make Sure They Read the Rug Before They Quote

A shop that quotes a repair without examining the rug is guessing. Before any needle touches a rug on our bench, we look at how it was made, the fiber in the pile and the foundation, the knot count, and whether the dyes are stable. That reading decides which repair the rug actually needs. It also decides when a repair is not worth doing, which an honest shop will tell you. John, a Google reviewer, brought us a wool rug with a dog-damaged corner where a full repair did not make sense for the rug’s value, so we sewed the corner up to stop it unraveling instead. His words: “better to not waste, right?”

Read the Reviews for Repair Stories, Not Stars

A star rating tells you people were happy. What you want is reviewers describing the specific repair you need, because fringe work, reweaving, and edge binding are different skills. Our Google profile holds a 5.0 rating, and the useful part is what they describe:

  • Fringe replaced: “They replaced the white fringe and the rug looks brand new”
  • Edges hand repaired: “They hand-repaired the worn edges and the tassels are stark white”
  • Moth damage found during cleaning and treated
  • Cleaning and repair on the same rug in one visit, machine-made included
  • Straight talk on cost: “no surprises or hidden cost”

Every quoted line above is from a named, public Google review of our shop. Check any company you consider the same way, ours included, on our testimonials page or straight on Google.

Questions Worth Asking Any San Diego Rug Repair Shop

Take this list to every shop you call. The answers separate a rug workshop from a carpet company that takes repair jobs on the side.

The Checklist, and How Zeytounian Answers It
Ask this What a good answer sounds like Our answer
Where is the repair done? In the shop’s own workshop, by named people, never shipped to a subcontractor By hand at our Kearny Mesa workshop, by Anthony and Alexander, third generation
Do you examine the rug before quoting? Yes, fiber, foundation, knot count, and dye stability first We read every rug before recommending anything, and the evaluation is free
Is the estimate written and free? Both, before any work starts Free written estimates, always before work begins
What if the repair is not worth it? They say so and offer a cheaper protective option We tell you straight and suggest the smaller fix when that serves the rug better
How long will it take? A realistic timeframe given with the estimate, not a guess on the phone You get a timeframe with your free estimate, based on the actual repair
Can you handle my rug’s construction? Specific experience with your rug type, Persian, Turkish, kilim, silk, wool Persian, Turkish, Indian, Afghan, Moroccan, kilim, silk, and wool, all by hand

Match the Shop to the Repair You Need

Rug repair is a family of trades rather than one skill, and it helps to name the problem before you start calling. Unraveling ends and worn fringe are fringe and end work. A frayed or missing edge is rug binding. Holes, thin spots, and moth channels call for reweaving, and moth damage itself needs treatment before rebuilding, covered on our moth damage repair page. Structural damage spread across a rug moves into restoration territory.

Whoever you choose should be able to tell you which of those your rug needs and why. Our rug repair page covers the full range, with Persian rug repair handled as its own specialty. And because a rug in for repair is usually dirty too, many clients pair the repair with a wash. One reviewer, Anna, had her Moroccan rug cleaned in a week and called out the communication as much as the work.

Getting the rug to us is easy either way. We pick up and deliver across San Diego County, or you can bring it to the shop on Ronson Road and talk the repair through at the counter.

Choosing a Rug Repair Service, Answered

Ask who does the repair and where. Our repairs happen at 7343 Ronson Rd Ste U in Kearny Mesa, and you are welcome to bring your rug in during open hours and talk it through with the people who will do the work.

It should be free, in writing, and given after someone has actually examined the rug. It should name the specific repair, and it should come with a realistic timeframe. That is what our free written estimates cover before any work starts.

It depends on the repair. Resetting a fringe is a much smaller job than reweaving a hole or rebuilding an edge, so we give you a realistic timeframe with your free estimate rather than a blanket promise. If you need the rug back by a date, tell us up front and we will say honestly whether that works.

Yes, and a good shop says so. When a full repair costs more than the rug justifies, we recommend the smaller option, like securing a damaged corner so it stops unraveling, or no work at all. We would rather lose a job than talk you into one.

Some offer it, but repair is hand work: reweaving knots, rebuilding bindings, sewing fringe. It is a different trade from cleaning carpet. Look for a shop with a workshop, named craftsmen, and reviews that describe repairs, whoever that turns out to be.

Authentic handmade rugs with intricate patterns and vibrant colors.

I can't enough about the brothers that own this business. Alex and Anthony are 3rd generation rug sellers, cleaners and offer repair services. Their knowledge of the various rugs is extensive. The business itself is a vast improvement over the prior vendor who serviced my rugs. They have a 9-step process for cleaning the rugs and the drying system ensures a good, dry, flat rug, without any evidence of trapped mildew or moisture. I have a lot of pets, my rug came home from the cleaning looking almost new. I've referred friends and neighbors, who want to maintain and preserve their Persian, Turkish, Afghani rugs to Zeytounian. Everything about the business it top of the line.
They did a great job cleaning two of my Karastan rugs, I would highly recommend

It was a medium wool area rug that needed cleaning as well as a repair in one of the corners. It’s an old repair that was unraveling and eaten by dry rot. Anthony and his crew were very upfront about what they can and can’t do, but it certainly exceeded my expectations. The rug looks beautiful. Thank you.

Brought in an Egyptian layer weave cotton rug to be treated prior to installation. The facility is run by the Zeytounian brothers, very friendly service and with suggestions for the care of the rug. I also purchased their recommended rug padding. They were helpful in unloading the loading the rug in my RAV4. Strongly recommend, no issues with the rug, it was beautiful. Photo attached. Any marks on the rug are from 3 and 5 year old grandchildren playing on it!!

I took our rug to Zeytounuan Rugs for cleaning after watching their short video. The rug is gold and ivory, and one foot on either side of the rug was dark brown from dirt. When I left it with Anthony I was hopeful that I may see some color where the walking paths were. Eight days after leaving the rug Anthony called to say the rug was ready for collection. I took it home and opened what looked like a new rug! The colors were bright and it is so, so very clean. You could never tell the rug is 20 years old. So happy!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Stewart. Twenty years of foot traffic on gold and ivory is about the hardest thing anyone hands us, so getting the colour back out of it was satisfying on our end too. Glad the video brought you in, and Anthony will be pleased.

Zeytounian Rug Cleaning and Repair have been my go to rug cleaners for the past 25 years. Kind, courteous, timely and through. My rugs are beautiful and will last forever with the care the Zeytounian family gives them. Call them now!?♥️♥️♥️
Response from the owner:Thank you, Marcia. Twenty five years of rugs between us is something we don't take lightly. Looking after them so they outlast all of us is the whole idea. We appreciate you saying so.

Loved working with them. Not only did our rugs come back beautiful and clean, they taught us more about the history of the carpets. Ours was likely woven by two women over 100 years ago in Persia. They say it took them two years. I feel more connected to these women.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Sarah. Reading where a rug came from is half the pleasure of this work, and a piece like yours carries a lot of hours in it. Glad it came back clean and that you know a little more about it now. We appreciate you taking the time.

This is one of those dying breed of amazing family businesses that make this country great. Friendly service, that old school way of doing business where you feel understood and appreciated. Cleaning service was great and delivered on time, communication was beyond great. I absolutely recommend this place for area rug cleaning.

Response from the owner:Thank you, Adrian. Three generations in, the old school way is really the only way we know. Glad the rug came back on time and that you always knew where things stood. We appreciate the recommendation.

Zeytounian Rugs did a great job repairing and cleaning a Turkish rug I’ve had since I was a teenager. The corner has been chewed and damaged by my dog many years ago, but they fixed it right up. After the repair and a clean it looks like new, I’m so pleased. The guys are super friendly and knowledgeable, just a pleasure to work with.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Adam. A chewed corner on a rug you've had that long is worth repairing properly rather than hiding, and Turkish weaves take the repair well. Glad it looks like new again.

Friendly, professional, hardworking brothers. Had two chinese ivory wool rugs cleaned. One large one smaller. One with a few spots i did not think they could get out, but they did. Very pleased. Would highly recommend them.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Reid. Ivory wool is unforgiving, so spots on it are the ones people assume are permanent. Glad we could prove otherwise on both. We appreciate the recommendation.

I had three rugs cleaned and service was outstanding! Very professional and personable. My rugs look brand new! Repaired fringe on one of my rugs and did an excellent job. Pick up and drop off is so convenient! Would highly recommend!!!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Patricia. Fringe repair is slow work and it's the detail most people notice afterwards, so it's good to hear it came out right. Glad the pickup and drop off made it easy. Three rugs at once is our favourite kind of day.

You never know who you’ll encounter when searching Google for a professional service, but these brothers were an incredible find! They are among the kindest, most efficient, and trustworthy service professionals I’ve ever met. They treated our rug as if it were their own and completely eliminated every sign of staining. Thank you so much for the outstanding service. I’ll gladly recommend you to anyone in need of professional rug cleaning!
Response from the owner:Thank you. Picking a rug cleaner off a search result is a leap of faith, so we're glad it paid off. Treating a rug like it's our own is the only way we know how to do it. We appreciate the recommendation.
We had a rug that had dog urine on it. Took it in on a Thursday and the entire rug was ready by Monday. Extremely quick turn-around time. They pick up rugs as well if you make an appointment which I will be utilizing in the future at this establishment.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Christian. Pet accidents need to be dealt with properly rather than quickly, so getting both on that one felt good. The pickup service is there whenever you need it, just give us a ring to book it in.

Zeytounian did an excellent job cleaning our rugs for a good price. Anthony & Alex were very helpful and quick to respond. They made the whole process easy and even identified the origin and patterns on our rugs. We highly recommend them and will definitely use their services again.

Superb service. Excellent communication. I was referred to get two large rugs cleaned. One wool , one synthetic blend. The shop arranged pick up, full deep cleaning, and return installation. Anthony was always easy to reach and quick to respond. We are very happy with the results. I highly recommend them for all of your carpet and rug cleaning needs. I will definitely use them again.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Dev. A wool rug and a synthetic blend need different handling, so it's good to hear they both came back the way you hoped. Glad the pickup and return install went smoothly as well. We appreciate the recommendation. Anthony
Nice guys to work with. They do a great job cleaning filthy Persian carpets (recommend that you watch a couple of their U-tube videos regarding how they do this). Added plus, they are great about answering their phones!
Response from the owner:Hi Katherine, thanks so much for the 5 stars! Persian rug cleaning takes precise, dedicated care, so we’re thrilled you're happy with the results. It's awesome to hear you enjoyed our YouTube videos, too! We always strive to be easy to reach, so whenever you need carpet or rug services again, we're just a phone call away.

What San Diego Clients Say About Choosing Us

I had a truly great experience with Zeytounian Rug Cleaning. We just moved here and I had intended to have my 6 rugs cleaned before we moved but never got around to it. I had already gotten a couple of estimates in our previous area, so I knew what to expect. Here in a new town, I contacted three different companies to try and get estimates. ONLY Zeytounian responded, and very quickly. They sent me a very reasonable estimate, and impressed by their great reviews, I scheduled a pick-up. The brothers arrived on time, were very helpful, and both have a great sense of humor!

They gave me a reasonable estimate for a wool rug. It was almost not worth it, seeing as I got it originally off Article, but better to not waste, right? They cleaned it then held it for me for a month while the room it was in was renovated (your mileage may vary). There was a damaged corner (dogs!!) that was too expensive to fully repair so the good fellow there sewed it up to at least protect it from unraveling. All the above and they are SO NICE. Also explained some differences to me between different rug weaves. They are ALL IN on rugs. Amazing stuff.
