Dry Valley Heat and Fine Dust

Escondido sits in an inland North County valley that runs a good deal hotter through summer than Oceanside or Carlsbad out on the coast, with older homes near downtown and newer tracts climbing into the hills. No marine layer reaches this far to keep things damp. What you get instead is fine, dry dust that drifts in and settles down into the base of the pile, plus wildfire ash in the bad seasons and the ordinary grit of rural and semi-rural living.

That same dry heat is hard on older rugs. This was grape and citrus country before avocados took over as the largest local crop in the 1960s, and the San Pasqual Valley east of town still holds working orchards. Orchard country puts fine soil in the air, and that soil ends up deep in the pile.

Ash that arrived during one bad week keeps sifting down through the pile for months afterward, joining the orchard-country dust already in the foundation. If the rug sat in the house through a smoky stretch, say so at the estimate, because a rug can smell fine and still be carrying ash low in the pile.
