Persian Rug Cleaning San Diego

Persian rug cleaning in San Diego is what the Zeytounian family has done since 1956, and knowing a Tabriz from a Heriz or a silk Qom changes how the rug is handled. Now in its third generation, our workshop reads the weave first, then decides how to wash it.

A hand-knotted Persian rug carries hundreds of knots per square inch and dyes drawn from madder root and indigo. We wash each one by full immersion in our own facility so soil, allergens, and pet urine leave the foundation completely, without stressing those natural colors.

The short version: Persian rugs hand washed in San Diego, with every color tested for colorfastness before the wash.

  • What makes this different from carpet cleaning? A Persian rug is hand knotted with natural dyes. Steam and machine methods built for wall to wall carpet can shrink the foundation or bleed the dyes.
  • Can you clean a silk Persian rug? Yes. Qom and silk highlight Nain pieces get a lighter hand, a gentler soap, and adjusted drying.
  • Will washing hurt the natural dyes in an antique? Every color is tested first. If a red or blue shows any tendency to run, we switch to a controlled low moisture method.
  • Do you pick up and deliver Persian rugs? Yes. Your rug stays in our hands from your door until it is back in place.

Persian Rug Cleaning Specialists in San Diego

Zeytounian Rugs hand washes Persian rugs in San Diego in a dedicated workshop, never with a machine in your home. A third generation family business since 1956, we clean city weaves like Isfahan and Nain and tribal rugs alike, protecting their knots and natural dyes, with pickup and delivery across San Diego County.

We wash Persian rugs in a dedicated workshop, never in your home with a carpet machine. A city-workshop weave like Isfahan or Nain sits on a fine cotton or silk foundation, and pushing water and detergent through it on your living room floor cannot reach the base of the knots where grit and urine collect. Every Persian rug we take in comes back to our Kearny Mesa facility, where it is submerged, hand washed, and flushed until the rinse water runs clear. That full immersion is what lifts contaminants out of the pile while protecting the madder reds and indigo blues that give these rugs their depth. When a rug arrives with pet urine, it gets its own stage: dried salts in a wool foundation hold odor and can burn dyes over time, so the rug is bathed in a natural, non-toxic solution that breaks those salts down and lets the wash flush them out with no residue and no lingering smell.

Why Persian Rugs Require Specialist Care

The value of a Persian rug lives in its knot density and its dyes. A finely woven Tabriz or Qom can hold several hundred asymmetric knots in a single square inch, and that density makes the pile both beautiful and stubborn to rinse. Older pieces were colored with plant dyes, madder for red, indigo for blue, walnut husk for brown, and some of those dyes stay fugitive for the life of the rug.

Handle one the way you would wall to wall carpet and the results show quickly. Hot water and high-pH detergent can bleed indigo into an ivory field. Over-wetting a cotton foundation can cause a Heriz to dry crooked. Silk highlights in a Nain scorch under aggressive scrubbing.

So we inspect every Persian rug before a drop of water touches it, reading the weave region, the fiber, the foundation, and the stability of each color. Across seventy years the family has washed Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Heriz, Nain, Qom, Qashqai, and village and tribal rugs, and that history is what tells us how far a given piece can be pushed. Trouble spots are settled before the bath as well, treated gently by hand so the surrounding pile and dyes stay undisturbed, and the rug is then soaked on both sides until the dirt, oils, and odor held deep in the knots have loosened their grip.

Persian Rug Styles We Clean

Regional origin tells us almost everything about how a rug should be washed. A geometric Heriz on a heavy wool foundation asks for a different hand than a curvilinear Isfahan with silk warps, so we set the soap blend, water temperature, and drying plan to the piece in front of us. However the wash is set, the rinse ends one way for every piece: flushed on both faces until the water runs completely clear, so no soap or loosened soil stays in the foundation to attract dirt later or dull the colors. Drying then finishes flat and slow on the racks, protecting the shape of the foundation and bringing the wool back to its natural softness. It is the same patience the rinse demands, since several hundred knots in a square inch make a fine pile as stubborn to rinse as it is beautiful.

Rugs we clean regularly include city weaves such as Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Nain, and Qom, along with Heriz and Serapi, Sarouk and Mahal, tribal and village weaves like Qashqai, Bakhtiari, Kurdish, and Gabbeh, antique and semi-antique pieces, all-silk and silk-highlight rugs, overdyed Persian rugs, and modern Persian-style wool rugs.

Before & After Rug Cleaning

The Persian Wash at a Glance

A Persian rug’s weave sets the terms as it moves through our full nine step immersion wash process. Madder reds and indigo blues are checked for colorfastness before the bath, the soap is matched to the fiber with a lighter blend for silk warps and highlights than for a heavy wool Heriz, and the rug is washed in the direction of the nap so the pile is never roughed up against its weave.

How the Weave Changes the Wash
Rug type What can go wrong How we wash it
City weaves (Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Nain, Qom) Several hundred knots per square inch make the pile stubborn to rinse, and hot water with high-pH detergent can bleed indigo into an ivory field Dye tested color by color, washed with a soap blend matched to the fiber, then flushed on both faces until the rinse water runs completely clear
Heriz, Serapi, and village or tribal wool weaves Over-wetting the foundation can leave a rug drying crooked A heavier wool wash suited to the weave, then dried flat and slow on the racks so the foundation keeps its shape
Silk and silk-highlight rugs (Qom, Nain) Silk scorches under aggressive scrubbing and needs a lighter hand than wool A gentler soap and lighter agitation, with drying watched closely to prevent browning or color migration
Authentic handmade rugs with intricate patterns and vibrant colors.

I was honestly so nervous to get my Persian rug cleaned. It was a wedding gift from my grandma, so it holds a very special place in my heart, and the thought of handing it over to someone else made me super anxious. From the very start, though, the team put my mind completely at ease. Before they even touched it, they asked thoughtful, expert questions like what region the rugs were originally from, which immediately showed me how deeply they understand their craft. You can tell they genuinely care about the history and integrity of the textiles they handle. When I got it back, their work completely exceeded my expectations. My rug looked brand new. I couldn't be happier with the results, and I will 100% be bringing all my future rugs back to them!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much, Sarah, for trusting Zeytounian Rugs with your special rug and for your wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear our care and expertise put you at ease and that you’re so happy with the results. We look forward to helping with your rugs in the future!

I had such a wonderful experience with Zeytounian Rug Cleaning & Repair. I especially appreciate that they are a family-owned business. Brothers, Anthony and Alex were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly take great pride in their work and their family’s business. I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve owned my rugs for about 25 years and had never had them professionally cleaned. These rugs are very special to me, and the results were honestly shocking—in the best way. They look absolutely amazing, and the colors and details have come back to life. I can’t believe I had actually considered getting rid of them. I’m so grateful for the care Anthony and Alex took with my rugs and that I’ll now be able to enjoy them for another 25 years. I would highly recommend Zeytounian Rug Cleaning & Repair to anyone looking for knowledgeable and genuinely kind professionals.
Response from the owner:Tracy, thank you so much for this! Anthony and Alex had a great time working on your rugs. We could tell how much those pieces mean to you after 25 years, and that kind of care makes our job the best. So glad we could bring them back to life, and here's to the next 25 years. Come see us anytime!

Zeytounian Rugs was amazing! They explained the process for cleaning the rug, listened to me talk about how the rug fit into our decor and how much we loved our rug (even though it was machine made), and they did an absolutely beautiful job of cleaning and repairing it with brand new fringe. Their work is superb, and I would recommend them to anyone needing to have a rug cleaned and/or repaired.

Response from the owner:Bettina, this one made our day. Didn't matter to us that the rug was machine made. It mattered to you, and that's the whole point. New fringe plus a full clean can bring an older rug right back, and yours came out beautiful. Thanks for trusting Zeytounian Rugs with something you clearly love. Anyone in San Diego who needs a rug cleaned or repaired, send them our way.

I had a truly great experience with Zeytounian Rug Cleaning. We just moved here and I had intended to have my 6 rugs cleaned before we moved but never got around to it. I had already gotten a couple of estimates in our previous area, so I knew what to expect. Here in a new town, I contacted three different companies to try and get estimates. ONLY Zeytounian responded, and very quickly. They sent me a very reasonable estimate, and impressed by their great reviews, I scheduled a pick-up. The brothers arrived on time, were very helpful, and both have a great sense of humor! The job was completed within the time frame they specified, the rugs delivered on time, and they were happy to fulfill my special requests (photos and wrapped for storage of a couple of rugs). And, the rugs look amazing! I could not be happier. It was a pleasure doing business with Zeytounian Rug Cleaning.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much, Lindsey! Welcome to San Diego, and thank you for trusting us with your rugs. We're so glad we could make the process easy from the initial estimate through pickup, cleaning, and delivery. It was a pleasure meeting you, and we're happy we could accommodate your storage requests as well. Enjoy your freshly cleaned rugs, and if you ever need anything in the future, we're always here to help. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience!

Persian Rug Cleaning Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A Persian rug is hand knotted at high density with wool, silk, and cotton, and colored with natural dyes that can move in water. The steam and machine methods used on wall to wall carpet can shrink that foundation or bleed the dyes. Because of that, we hand wash by immersion and let the construction of each rug set the approach. The risk also sits in different places: a dense Persian pile traps fine grit right at the base of the knots where a vacuum cannot reach, so the rug is dusted on both faces with controlled vibration before any water is added, and removing that grit dry protects the foundation and adds years to the rug.

Yes. Silk warps and silk highlights need a lighter hand and a gentler soap than an all-wool rug, and we adjust the wash and the drying to suit them. Tell us when we collect the rug if it is silk or a silk blend so we can plan the cleaning around it. Drying is watched just as closely, since fast, even extraction in the centrifuge, which draws close to ninety percent of the moisture from deep in the foundation, followed by racks in a monitored room, is what keeps a wet rug from browning or letting one color migrate into the next.

That is exactly what the dye test in our process guards against. We check every color for colorfastness before the full wash, and if a madder red or indigo blue shows any tendency to run we switch to a controlled low-moisture method that keeps the dyes stable. The testing runs color by color, because hand applied overdyes and traditional plant dyes can move once they meet water and you cannot tell by looking which will hold.

Yes. Pickup and delivery covers San Diego County, including La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, and Coronado, so your Persian rug stays in our hands from the moment it leaves your home until it is back in place. Every rug is measured and given a free written estimate before anything is scheduled, and after the wash the pile is groomed to follow the lay of the knots so the pattern reads clearly again.
