Rug Fringe Repair and Replacement in San Diego

Rug fringe repair at Zeytounian Rugs starts by securing the end so the rug stops unraveling, using chain stitching or an overcast that locks the last row of knots. If enough warp remains we rebuild the original fringe. If not, we sew on new fringe matched to its length and tone.

Rug Fringe Repair in San Diego, Secured by Hand

Rug fringe repair in San Diego begins with understanding what the fringe actually is. On a handmade rug the fringe is not a trim added for decoration. It is the warp, the set of foundation threads that run the full length of the rug and are tied off at each end. Every knot in the pile is anchored to those threads, so the fringe is the exposed edge of the structure that holds the whole piece together.

That changes how you should think about frayed ends. When the fringe unravels, the rug does not simply look tired. The end knots lose their anchor and begin to slip, and the rug shortens row by row. Left alone, a small patch of loose fringe turns into missing pile and a shrinking rug. The sooner the ends are locked, the more of the original weave stays with the rug.

At Zeytounian Rugs this work has been done by hand since 1956. Nicholas Zeytounian brought the trade to San Diego, and his sons Anthony and Alexander now run the bench as the third generation. Fringe and end repair is one of the most common jobs to reach our Kearny Mesa workshop, and it is one of the most worthwhile, because catching it early costs you far less of the rug.

Original Fringe and Added Fringe

There are two very different things people mean when they say they want new fringe. On a handmade rug the original fringe is the warp itself, so rebuilding it means working with the foundation the weaver left. When those ends are gone past saving, a length of new fringe can be sewn onto a secured edge instead. Both are honest repairs. The difference matters because one restores the rug’s own structure while the other finishes the end once the warp can no longer carry fringe on its own. We read your rug first and tell you which one it needs.

  • Chain stitch and overcast: lock the loose ends before more of the rug goes
  • Rebuilding worn fringe from the rug’s own warp threads
  • New sewn-on fringe when the original ends are gone
  • Re-securing end knots that have started to slip
  • Matching fringe length and color to the rest of the piece
  • End-foundation repair on Persian, Turkish, wool, and silk rugs

Fringe & Ends

Stop the unraveling before it spreads

The first move is always to secure the end so the rug stops losing itself. We do that with chain stitching or an overcast, a hand technique that locks the last row of knots and holds the foundation in place. Only once the end is stable do we decide what comes next. If enough warp remains, we rebuild the worn fringe from the rug’s own threads. If the ends are too far gone, we secure the edge and sew on new fringe matched to the length and tone of the original. The rug tells us which path is right, and we walk you through it before any work starts.

Rug Bindings

Fringe protects the ends, and binding protects the long sides. The two failures often travel together, because once one edge opens the rug loses tension across the whole piece. When the wrapped yarn on a side wears through, the selvage underneath frays and the rug starts to come apart at the damage. We rebuild the edge by hand in the weight you prefer. If your sides need attention along with the ends, our rug binding repair in San Diego covers the full range:

  • Single Edge Weaving
  • Double Edge Weaving
  • Triple Edge Weaving
  • Quadruple Edge Weaving

Reweaving Damaged Areas

When fringe loss has been ignored long enough, the damage moves past the ends and into the field. Knots slip, the foundation opens, and you are left with worn or missing pile rather than just a frayed edge. Reweaving rebuilds that. We reset the foundation first, then knot new wool or silk into the gap, matched in color and density to the surrounding weave so the rebuilt rows read as original. It is the slow way back from damage that started at the ends. Common cases include:

  • End Rows Lost to Unraveling
  • Worn Spot Rug Damage
  • Rug Holes with no foundation
  • Holes with patch work

Why choose Zeytounian Rugs for Rug Fringe Repair in San Diego?

Fringe work looks simple from the outside, which is exactly why it is easy to get wrong. Machine-sewn fringe glued or blind-stitched over a frayed end can hide the problem while the foundation keeps slipping underneath. Seventy years on the same bench have taught us to secure the structure first and finish the ends in a way that holds, so the repair protects the rug instead of masking the damage.

This page is part of our wider rug repair in San Diego service, and fringe is usually where a rug first shows it needs attention. We handle ends on hand-knotted Persian, Turkish, Afghan, and Moroccan rugs, on wool and silk, and on machine-made area rugs, because the right method depends on how the piece is built. Pickup runs from La Jolla and Del Mar through Rancho Santa Fe and Carmel Valley to Coronado, and anywhere else in the county, free in both directions, so a large or fragile rug never has to be folded into a car. We collect it, repair it, and return it to you.

Zeytounian Rugs has been San Diego’s trusted rug cleaning and repair specialist since 1956, and end and fringe restoration is where three generations of hand practice show most. Every rug that comes through the door gets an honest read and a clear recommendation before we begin, and every estimate is free.

Rug Fringe Questions, Answered

Foot traffic, vacuum beater bars, and time all wear on the exposed warp ends. Because the fringe sits at the very edge of the rug, it takes the most abuse and shows wear first. Once a few ends loosen, the damage spreads inward, which is why frayed fringe is a signal to act rather than something to put off.

It depends on how much warp is left. If enough of the original foundation survives, we secure it and rebuild the fringe from the rug’s own threads. When the ends are gone past that point, we lock the edge and sew on new fringe matched to the original. We tell you which applies at the free estimate.

On a handmade rug the original fringe is the warp, part of the rug’s structure. Sewn-on fringe is a separate length added to a secured edge once the warp can no longer carry fringe itself. The first restores the rug’s own foundation. The second is an honest finish for ends that are beyond rebuilding.

Yes. Loose fringe means the end knots have lost their anchor, and a rug will keep shortening as long as those ends stay open. A small securing job today prevents lost rows and reweaving later, so early fringe repair is almost always the cheaper path.

We do. Machine-made and area rugs have fringe that is sewn or woven on rather than structural, and it can still be secured, rebuilt, or replaced. The method differs from hand-knotted work, which is why we inspect the rug before recommending an approach.

No. Pickup and delivery covers San Diego County. We collect the rug, complete the fringe repair at our Kearny Mesa workshop, and bring it back to you.

Zeytounian Rugs did a great job repairing and cleaning a Turkish rug I’ve had since I was a teenager. The corner has been chewed and damaged by my dog many years ago, but they fixed it right up. After the repair and a clean it looks like new, I’m so pleased. The guys are super friendly and knowledgeable, just a pleasure to work with.

Friendly, professional, hardworking brothers. Had two chinese ivory wool rugs cleaned. One large one smaller. One with a few spots i did not think they could get out, but they did. Very pleased. Would highly recommend them.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Reid. Ivory wool is unforgiving, so spots on it are the ones people assume are permanent. Glad we could prove otherwise on both. We appreciate the recommendation.

Knowledgeable, hardworking, kind, and professional. What else can I say.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Vincent. That's plenty to say, and we appreciate you taking the time.
I had three rugs cleaned and service was outstanding! Very professional and personable. My rugs look brand new! Repaired fringe on one of my rugs and did an excellent job. Pick up and drop off is so convenient! Would highly recommend!!!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Patricia. Fringe repair is slow work and it's the detail most people notice afterwards, so it's good to hear it came out right. Glad the pickup and drop off made it easy. Three rugs at once is our favourite kind of day.

You never know who you’ll encounter when searching Google for a professional service, but these brothers were an incredible find! They are among the kindest, most efficient, and trustworthy service professionals I’ve ever met. They treated our rug as if it were their own and completely eliminated every sign of staining. Thank you so much for the outstanding service. I’ll gladly recommend you to anyone in need of professional rug cleaning!
Response from the owner:Thank you. Picking a rug cleaner off a search result is a leap of faith, so we're glad it paid off. Treating a rug like it's our own is the only way we know how to do it. We appreciate the recommendation.
We had a rug that had dog urine on it. Took it in on a Thursday and the entire rug was ready by Monday. Extremely quick turn-around time. They pick up rugs as well if you make an appointment which I will be utilizing in the future at this establishment.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Christian. Pet accidents need to be dealt with properly rather than quickly, so getting both on that one felt good. The pickup service is there whenever you need it, just give us a ring to book it in.

Superb service. Excellent communication. I was referred to get two large rugs cleaned. One wool , one synthetic blend. The shop arranged pick up, full deep cleaning, and return installation. Anthony was always easy to reach and quick to respond. We are very happy with the results. I highly recommend them for all of your carpet and rug cleaning needs. I will definitely use them again.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Dev. A wool rug and a synthetic blend need different handling, so it's good to hear they both came back the way you hoped. Glad the pickup and return install went smoothly as well. We appreciate the recommendation. Anthony

I was honestly so nervous to get my Persian rug cleaned. It was a wedding gift from my grandma, so it holds a very special place in my heart, and the thought of handing it over to someone else made me super anxious. From the very start, though, the team put my mind completely at ease. Before they even touched it, they asked thoughtful, expert questions like what region the rugs were originally from, which immediately showed me how deeply they understand their craft. You can tell they genuinely care about the history and integrity of the textiles they handle. When I got it back, their work completely exceeded my expectations. My rug looked brand new. I couldn't be happier with the results, and I will 100% be bringing all my future rugs back to them!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much, Sarah, for trusting Zeytounian Rugs with your special rug and for your wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear our care and expertise put you at ease and that you’re so happy with the results. We look forward to helping with your rugs in the future!

I had such a wonderful experience with Zeytounian Rug Cleaning & Repair. I especially appreciate that they are a family-owned business. Brothers, Anthony and Alex were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly take great pride in their work and their family’s business. I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve owned my rugs for about 25 years and had never had them professionally cleaned. These rugs are very special to me, and the results were honestly shocking—in the best way. They look absolutely amazing, and the colors and details have come back to life. I can’t believe I had actually considered getting rid of them. I’m so grateful for the care Anthony and Alex took with my rugs and that I’ll now be able to enjoy them for another 25 years. I would highly recommend Zeytounian Rug Cleaning & Repair to anyone looking for knowledgeable and genuinely kind professionals.
Response from the owner:Tracy, thank you so much for this! Anthony and Alex had a great time working on your rugs. We could tell how much those pieces mean to you after 25 years, and that kind of care makes our job the best. So glad we could bring them back to life, and here's to the next 25 years. Come see us anytime!
