Fine Solana Beach Rugs, Washed by Hand

Solana Beach was laid out in the 1920s by Colonel Ed Fletcher, who cut through the seaside bluff to open Fletcher Cove, the beach locals long called Pillbox. Today the town is known for the Cedros Design District, a run of furniture and rug showrooms near the Coaster station where a lot of the county’s interior work is sourced. Many of the finer rugs we clean in North County were bought a few blocks from where they now live.

A rug from a bluff-top house above the cove and a designer piece from a Cedros loft both come to the same bench and get the same care, one at a time. We test the dyes, wash the rug fully under water, and dry it flat under control. That is the method a hand knotted rug was made for, and it is nothing like the surface scrub a rented steam machine leaves behind.

What the Bluffs and Marine Layer Do to Solana Beach Rugs

Solana Beach sits on a low coastal bluff with the Pacific on one side and the San Dieguito River valley to the south, and the summer marine layer settles over both. That damp is the real threat to wool and silk. A rug that stays faintly moist under a bed or a heavy sofa turns into feeding ground for clothes moths, and the worst cases hide in quiet rooms where nothing disturbs the pile for a full season.

Salt and sand come next. Homes near Fletcher Cove and along the bluff take in beach sand that works down into the knots, and salt air over the years dulls the natural dyes on rugs in the seaward rooms. Viscose and bamboo silk rugs, common in the Cedros design trade, handle coastal damp the worst and can brown or stiffen as moisture rises through the fibers. None of it is visible from above, which is why we begin every job at the foundation and work up.

Of course. The workshop is at 7343 Ronson Rd Ste U in Kearny Mesa, about twenty minutes from Solana Beach down Interstate 5, and we hold cleaned rugs until you are ready to collect them.

Yes, and we see a lot of them. Fine wool, silk, and viscose pieces from the Cedros showrooms get the same hand wash and controlled drying as any antique, matched to the fiber and the dyes.

It is the method these rugs were built for. We test the dyes first and adjust the wash to the age and condition of the piece, far gentler than in-home steam cleaning.

Yes. When a rug needs it we add a urine decontamination treatment that breaks the salts down at the source, so the smell does not return with the next humid morning.

Zeytounian Rugs was amazing!
