Fine Cardiff-by-the-Sea Rugs, Washed by Hand

Cardiff-by-the-Sea sits on the south edge of Encinitas, a small seaside community laid out in the 1910s, its streets a mix of English town names like Birmingham and the composer names of what locals call the Composer District. It is best known for the reef break off San Elijo State Beach and for the surfer statue at the north end that the town has dressed up in costume more times than anyone can count. The homes are close to the water, many of them older bungalows on tight lots above the tide.

That closeness to the surf is exactly what a fine rug feels. A wool piece from a house above Cardiff Reef and a silk rug from a home near the San Elijo Lagoon both come to the same bench and get the same work, one at a time. We test the dyes, wash the rug fully under water, and dry it flat under control, the treatment a hand knotted rug was made for and the opposite of a rented steam machine.

What the Reef and Lagoon Do to Cardiff Rugs

Cardiff is boxed between the ocean at San Elijo State Beach and the San Elijo Lagoon behind it, so damp air presses in from both sides. The marine layer holds humidity against wool and silk for months in summer, and a rug that stays faintly moist under a bed or a heavy sofa becomes feeding ground for clothes moths. The damage turns up first in quiet rooms, where nothing disturbs the pile and the larvae work through a whole season unseen.

Sand and salt finish the job. Homes along San Elijo Avenue and the streets above the campground take in beach sand that settles deep in the foundation, and salt air slowly flattens natural dye on the rugs closest to the reef. Viscose and bamboo silk rugs handle this damp the worst and can brown or stiffen as moisture rises through the fibers. Because none of it shows from the top, a Cardiff rug can look presentable and still be failing underneath, which is why we work from the back first.

Yes. Anywhere in the 92007 ZIP, we collect the rug, wash it at our Kearny Mesa workshop, and return it when it is finished.

Of course. The workshop is at 7343 Ronson Rd Ste U in Kearny Mesa, about twenty-two minutes from Cardiff down Interstate 5, and we hold cleaned rugs until you are ready to collect them.

Often, yes. The water lines and brown marks that form when silk or viscose stays moist can usually be reduced or removed once the rug is washed and dried under controlled conditions. We look at it closely at pickup and tell you what to expect.

It is the traditional method these rugs were built for. We test the dyes first and adjust the wash to the age and condition of the piece, far gentler than in-home steam cleaning.

Yes. When a rug needs it we add a urine decontamination treatment that breaks the salts down at the source, so the smell does not return with the next humid morning.

We had a rug that had dog urine on it. Took it in on a Thursday and the entire rug was ready by Monday. Extremely quick turn-around time. They pick up rugs as well if you make an appointment which I will be utilizing in the future at this establishment.

I love Zeytounian! They are the best combination of professionalism and great customer service. I have brought them six or seven rugs and not only do they do an amazing job cleaning them, but they also can tell you the story of the rug's origins, etc. They do pick-ups at your home if needed and they are also lovely people - friendly and kind.
