Fine Encinitas Rugs, Washed by Hand

Encinitas pulled five older communities into one city in 1986, and each of them still keeps its own character. Old Encinitas holds the surf shops and the 1928 La Paloma Theatre along Coast Highway 101, New Encinitas spreads inland around El Camino Real, and Cardiff, Leucadia, and Olivenhain each carry their own history. A rug from a bluff cottage near Moonlight Beach and a rug from a newer house off Encinitas Boulevard get the same bench work from us, one piece at a time.

This was flower country long before it was a beach town. The Ecke family grew poinsettias on the hills here for generations and made the area the growing center for that plant, and the greenhouses and nurseries left the soil worked and the air damp. Rugs in these homes carry that coastal moisture in their foundations. We test the dyes, wash the rug fully under water, and dry it flat under control, which is the treatment a hand knotted piece was built for and the opposite of a rented steam machine.

What the Coast Does to Encinitas Rugs

Encinitas runs along six miles of coast, from the bluffs above Swami’s and the Self-Realization Fellowship gardens down to the flats near Moonlight State Beach, and the marine layer sits over all of it through the summer. For wool and silk that damp is the real threat. A rug that stays faintly moist under a bed or a heavy couch turns into feeding ground for clothes moths, and the worst cases show up in quiet rooms where nothing disturbs the pile for a whole season.

Sand and salt are the next two. Homes near Moonlight and D Street take in beach sand that works down into the knots where a household vacuum never reaches, and the bluff houses along Neptune Avenue sit in salt air that slowly flattens natural dye. Viscose and bamboo silk rugs, which turn up constantly in Encinitas remodels, handle coastal damp the worst and can brown or stiffen when the moisture wicks up through the fibers. A rug can look fine from above and still be breaking down at the foundation, which is why we work from the back of the piece first.

Most rugs are back within one to two weeks. Antique pieces and rugs that need repair take longer, and we give you the timeline at pickup, not after.

Yes. Anywhere in the 92024 ZIP, from Old Encinitas to Olivenhain, we collect the rug, wash it at our Kearny Mesa workshop, and bring it back when it is finished.

Of course. The workshop is at 7343 Ronson Rd Ste U in Kearny Mesa, about twenty-five minutes from the coast down Highway 52, and we hold cleaned rugs until you are ready to collect them.

Often, yes. The brown marks that form when viscose or silk stays moist can usually be reduced or removed once the rug is washed properly and dried under controlled conditions. We look at it closely at pickup and tell you honestly what to expect.

We had a rug that had dog urine on it. Took it in on a Thursday and the entire rug was ready by Monday. Extremely quick turn-around time. They pick up rugs as well if you make an appointment which I will be utilizing in the future at this establishment.

I love Zeytounian! They are the best combination of professionalism and great customer service.
