Fine Olivenhain Rugs, Washed by Hand

Olivenhain began in 1884 as a German farm colony inland from the Encinitas coast, and its name comes from the German for olive grove. The white Olivenhain Meeting Hall from 1895 still stands at the center of the community and is used to this day. The area kept its rural feel through the decades, with large lots, horse trails, and semi-country homes tucked between Rancho Santa Fe and the coastal towns, and the rugs inside those homes are often substantial pieces that anchor big rooms.

A hand knotted rug from an equestrian property off Rancho Santa Fe Road gets the same bench work as any coastal piece, one at a time. We test the dyes, wash the rug fully under water, and dry it flat under control. That is the method a fine rug was made for, and it clears the fine grit and animal dander that rural inland living drives deep into the foundation, where a household vacuum never reaches.

What Rural Inland Living Does to Olivenhain Rugs

Olivenhain sits inland from the coast, drier than the beach communities but far from immune. The marine layer still reaches this far most summer mornings, and the mix of horse properties, dirt trails, and open lots means fine dust and dander travel into the house and settle in the pile. A large wool rug in a low-traffic formal room can hold that grit for years while looking clean from above.

Moths are the quieter threat here. Rugs in guest rooms and formal spaces that rarely see foot traffic are exactly where clothes moths like to work, and a rug that stays undisturbed through a warm season can lose fiber before anyone notices. We start every job at the foundation for that reason, checking the knots and the base before the rug ever touches water.

Most rugs are back within one to two weeks. Antique pieces and rugs that need repair take longer, and we give you the timeline at pickup, not after.

Yes. Across the inland side of the 92024 ZIP, including the horse properties and the streets around the Meeting Hall, we collect the rug, wash it at our Kearny Mesa workshop, and return it when it is finished.

Of course. The workshop is at 7343 Ronson Rd Ste U in Kearny Mesa, about twenty-eight minutes from Olivenhain, and we hold cleaned rugs until you are ready to collect them.

Usually, yes. Dander and animal odor settle deep in the foundation, and a full immersion wash reaches them where a surface clean cannot. For urine we add a decontamination treatment that breaks the salts down at the source.

It is the method these rugs were built for. We test the dyes first and adjust the wash to the size, age, and condition of the piece, far gentler than in-home steam cleaning.

We had a rug that had dog urine on it. Took it in on a Thursday and the entire rug was ready by Monday. Extremely quick turn-around time. They pick up rugs as well if you make an appointment which I will be utilizing in the future at this establishment.

I love Zeytounian! They are the best combination of professionalism and great customer service.
