Fine Leucadia Rugs, Washed by Hand

Leucadia is the north end of Encinitas, a community named by English spiritualists in the 1880s who gave its streets Greco-Roman names like Hermes, Vulcan, and Neptune. It kept its own loose, tree-shaded character, with tall eucalyptus arching over Coast Highway 101 and a long-standing local motto to keep the place funky. Behind the highway sit older cottages and, on the ocean side, the bluff homes that look straight out over Beacon’s and Grandview beaches.

Those bluff and cottage rugs live in real coastal air, and a wool piece from a Neptune Avenue house and a rug from a bungalow off Vulcan both come to the same bench and get the same work, one at a time. We test the dyes, wash each rug fully under water, and dry it flat under control, the treatment a hand knotted rug was made for and the opposite of a rented steam machine.

What the Bluffs and Eucalyptus Do to Leucadia Rugs

Leucadia runs along the coast with steep bluffs down to Beacon’s and Grandview, and the summer marine layer sits over the whole strip. For wool and silk that damp is the catch. A rug that stays faintly moist under a bed or a heavy sofa becomes feeding ground for clothes moths, and the worst of it hides in the quiet rooms of the older cottages, where nothing disturbs the pile for a season.

Salt, sand, and shade do the rest. The bluff homes on Neptune take in salt air that flattens natural dye over the years, beach sand climbs the trails from Beacon’s and settles in the foundation, and the heavy eucalyptus canopy keeps some yards and rooms cool and slow to dry. Viscose and bamboo silk rugs handle that steady damp the worst and can brown or stiffen as moisture rises through the fibers. Because none of it shows from the top, a Leucadia rug can look fine and still be breaking down underneath.

Coastal damp is hardest on delicate fibers, so silk rug cleaning and viscose rug cleaning for Leucadia homes get the gentlest handling our bench allows. Yes. Anywhere in the 92024 ZIP, including the Neptune bluffs and the streets off Coast Highway 101, we collect the rug, wash it at our Kearny Mesa workshop, and return it when it is finished.

Of course. The workshop is at 7343 Ronson Rd Ste U in Kearny Mesa, about twenty-seven minutes from Leucadia down Interstate 5, and we hold cleaned rugs until you are ready to collect them.

It can be. Rugs that never fully dry are the ones moths and mildew find first. A full immersion wash and controlled drying reset the rug, and we can point out which rooms tend to hold moisture so it does not start again.

It is the method these rugs were built for. We test the dyes first and adjust the wash to the age and condition of the piece, far gentler than in-home steam cleaning.

Yes. When a rug needs it we add a urine decontamination treatment that breaks the salts down at the source, so the smell does not return with the next humid morning.

Zeytounian Rugs was amazing!
