A rug pad is the cheapest thing you can put under a rug and the one that decides how long the rug lasts. It gives you cushioning underfoot and takes the everyday wear of foot traffic before that wear reaches the pile. On a hard floor it stops the rug travelling every time somebody walks across it, which adds stability and support underfoot. It reduces fiber stress, protects the rug’s foundation, and puts a layer between the rug and your flooring. The barrier is the part worth understanding, because it changes what an accident costs you. Wool holds a surprising amount of liquid and then lets the rest through. On a bare floor that liquid reaches hardwood or grout and sits there. With the barrier under it, the spill is held above your floor. The rug still needs washing, and we will say more about that below.

The pad should end where the rug ends.
A pad bought off a shelf comes in whatever sizes the shelf carries, and hand knotted rugs are rarely those sizes. An old rug is often not even square. Ours are cut to fit the rug they are going under, so the pad stops just inside the edge and nothing shows and nothing bunches. Ask about it at the free estimate, or when the rug is already with us for a wash.
Foot traffic does not wear a rug from the top down. Weight presses the pile against whatever is underneath, and on a bare floor that is a hard surface with no give. The pad takes that pressure instead, which is what people mean when they say a pad makes a rug last. It absorbs the everyday wear and tear of foot traffic, reduces fiber stress, and protects the foundation the whole rug is built on.
The barrier protects your floor. It does nothing for the rug sitting on top of it. Urine soaks into the pile and the backing and stays in the wool long after the surface looks fine, and that still needs the decontamination soak on our pet urine and odor removal page. The pad needs attention too. Liquid the barrier stops has to go somewhere, so after a real accident bring the pad in with the rug rather than putting a damp one back down. A pad left damp underneath is one of the causes we look for when a rug arrives smelling of cellar.

Nothing here is sold with a scare story. If your rug is on carpet, or in a room nobody walks through, we will tell you a pad matters less. If it is a hand knotted rug on a hard floor in the middle of a hallway, we will tell you that too.

Your floor, yes. Your rug, no. The Eco Preferred has a built in pet urine and moisture barrier, so an accident or a spilled glass is held above the hardwood or tile instead of soaking into it. The rug above still takes the urine into the pile and the backing, and that needs the decontamination soak we use on our pet urine and odor removal service. Bring the pad in with the rug when it happens.

The one exclusion worth knowing is that the pet resistant backing is not warrantied against punctures or holes, so a determined claw is not covered. A damp one can. A pad that stays wet under a rug is one of the sources we check when a rug arrives smelling musty, along with storage, closed rooms, and old spills. It is also why a smell can return after a wash if the conditions underneath never changed. We point out anything we notice about the cause when the rug is evaluated.
