Fine Carlsbad Rugs, Washed by Hand

Carlsbad grew up around its mineral wells in the 1880s and took its name from the spa town of Karlovy Vary, then spread from the seaside Village down to La Costa and out past the three lagoons. The Flower Fields on the hills above the coast still bloom in ranunculus every spring, a reminder that this was growing country for decades. Homes here run the full range, from early Village bungalows near the train depot to large houses off El Camino Real, and the rugs inside them run just as wide.

A rug from a bluff house near Carlsbad State Beach and a rug from an inland home in La Costa both come to the same bench and get the same care, one piece at a time. We test the dyes, wash each rug fully under water, and dry it flat under control. That is the method a hand knotted piece was built for, and it is the opposite of the surface scrub a rented steam machine gives.

What the Coast and Lagoons Do to Carlsbad Rugs

Carlsbad wraps around seven miles of coastline and three coastal lagoons, Buena Vista, Agua Hedionda, and Batiquitos, so damp air is never far from the pile of a rug. The summer marine layer holds humidity against wool and silk for months at a stretch, and a rug that stays faintly moist under a bed or a heavy sofa becomes prime ground for clothes moths. The worst of it shows in quiet rooms, where nothing disturbs the fibers and the larvae feed through a season before a bare patch appears.

Salt and sand are the other two. Viscose and bamboo silk rugs, common in La Costa remodels, handle lagoon and coastal damp the worst and can brown or stiffen as moisture wicks up through the fibers. None of it is visible from the top of the rug, which is why we start every job from the foundation.

Yes. Across the Carlsbad ZIPs, from the Village to La Costa, we collect the rug, wash it at our Kearny Mesa workshop, and return it when it is finished.

Of course. The workshop is at 7343 Ronson Rd Ste U in Kearny Mesa, about thirty-five minutes south of Carlsbad on Interstate 5, and we hold cleaned rugs until you are ready to collect them.

Usually, yes. A musty smell means moisture and soil have settled deep in the foundation, and a full immersion wash with controlled drying clears both, rather than masking the odor the way a surface clean does.

We got our Persian rug professionally cleaned for the first time after nearly 20 years. It moved with us across the country several times and survived our college years and our first child’s baby/toddler years. Zeytounian Rugs did an incredible job!
