San Diego Turkish Rug Cleaning Specialists

A Turkish rug can be a densely knotted Oushak, a village prayer rug, or a flatwoven kilim, and each is built in a different way. We identify the weave and the fibers first, test the natural dyes for colorfastness, then hand-wash in a way that protects the pattern and the pile or flatweave. Why Handmade Turkish Rugs Need Facility Washing

Handmade Turkish rugs are woven from wool, sometimes wool and silk, and colored with dyes drawn from madder, indigo, and other plant sources. In-home steam cleaning and harsh detergents can dull those colors or push a deep red into the ivory grounds Turkish weavers favor.

Every rug asks for its own approach, and Turkish weaving alone spans a wide range. A tightly knotted silk piece and a coarse wool kilim cannot be treated the same way, so we tailor the wash to the material, dyes, and construction of each rug.

Persian Rugs

Persian rugs share Turkey’s hand-knotting tradition but usually rely on the asymmetrical Senneh knot rather than the symmetrical Turkish knot, which gives them their own density and drape. They are knotted in wool or silk with vegetable or synthetic dyes that have to be tested before any water is applied. We check each Persian rug for colorfastness, adjust water temperature and pH to suit it, and wash gently to protect the pile, foundation, and colors.

Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs cover handwoven pieces from Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus, China, India, Afghanistan, and beyond, each with its own fibers, dyes, and weave. Turkish examples alone run from rugged Anatolian village rugs to refined Hereke silks and flatwoven kilims. Origin and construction get pinned down before any oriental rug is cleaned here, and the process is set to what we find, because a slit-woven kilim and a densely knotted pile rug have almost nothing in common on the wash floor.

Wool Rugs

Wool is the backbone of Turkish weaving and one of the more forgiving fibers to clean when it is handled correctly. Its natural lanolin resists soil and gives the pile resilience. A full immersion bath wakes Turkish wool back up, returning softness and brightness without shrinking the pile or pulling it out of shape. Steam cleaning in the home can permanently mat wool, so ours is washed at the facility instead.

Silk Rugs

Silk appears in the finest Turkish rugs, from Hereke pieces to the wool and silk highlights woven into Anatolian designs, and it needs the gentlest approach we offer. The fibers are very fine, the dyes are often delicate, and heat or harsh chemicals can flatten the sheen for good. We hand-wash silk rugs with low-pH solutions and never use high water pressure or heat drying, so the luster, drape, and fine detail come through intact.

Viscose, Bamboo Silk & Custom Designer Rugs

Art silk is the trade name for viscose and bamboo silk, fibers that stand in for real silk in newer rugs yet rank among the most fragile we handle. They react badly to water and can brown, stiffen, or lose their shape if washed carelessly. We use carefully controlled moisture and specialized techniques to clean them safely, and can often reverse the cellulosic browning that builds up over time.

Synthetic & Machine Made Rugs

Machine-made pieces in polypropylene, nylon, or polyester stand up to wear better than handmade rugs, but they still trap deep soil, pet odors, and allergens that a vacuum cannot reach. Our full immersion process flushes out embedded dirt and refreshes the pile without harming the backing or construction. Even an everyday machine-made rug comes back noticeably cleaner than any in-home attempt can manage.

One Wash, Read Per Rug

Turkish pieces follow our full nine step immersion wash process, applied to what the weaver made. A pile rug is dusted down through its knots and soaked until the soil loosens its grip, while a flatwoven kilim gets a gentler pass and takes the wash through both faces of the weave, and every red, indigo, and ivory is wet-tested first so a strong red never crosses into an ivory ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you clean kilims and other flatwoven Turkish rugs in San Diego?

Yes. A kilim has no pile, so it is dusted more gently, dye-tested first, and hand-washed on both faces of the weave at a pace the flatweave can take. The flatwoven ends are set square during finishing so the rug lies true. The gentler dusting matters because grit grinds at the base of a weave with every footstep, so it is shaken out while the rug is still dry rather than washed through it.

Will the reds and indigos in my Turkish rug bleed?

Those colors can run if they are pushed, which is why every dye is wet-tested before the rug is immersed. Colors that hold go through the full wash. If one shows movement, the rug is cleaned with a controlled low-moisture method so nothing migrates into the field.

How is cleaning a Turkish rug different from cleaning a Persian rug?

The construction differs. Turkish rugs are tied with the symmetrical Ghiordes knot while Persian rugs usually use the asymmetrical Senneh knot, which changes density and drape. We identify the weave first and set the soap, water temperature, and handling to match the rug in front of us. Once the rug is dry the pile is brushed back the way it was woven, fringes are straightened, and the surface settles so the colors read as they should.

Can you wash a fine wool and silk or Hereke piece at your San Diego facility?

Yes, with the gentlest process we offer. Silk fibers are hand-washed with low-pH solutions, never exposed to high water pressure or heat drying, so the sheen and fine detail survive the cleaning intact.

Do you pick up Turkish rugs anywhere in San Diego?

We do. Pickup and delivery are available across San Diego County, and every rug starts with an inspection at our Kearny Mesa facility and a free estimate before washing begins. After the wash, excess water is spun out in a rug centrifuge that gives the rug a final flush, and drying finishes on racks where airflow and humidity are managed until the weave has dried evenly through.

I can't enough about the brothers that own this business. Alex and Anthony are 3rd generation rug sellers, cleaners and offer repair services. Their knowledge of the various rugs is extensive. The business itself is a vast improvement over the prior vendor who serviced my rugs. They have a 9-step process for cleaning the rugs and the drying system ensures a good, dry, flat rug, without any evidence of trapped mildew or moisture. Brought in an Egyptian layer weave cotton rug to be treated prior to installation. The facility is run by the Zeytounian brothers, very friendly service and with suggestions for the care of the rug. I also purchased their recommended rug padding. They were helpful in unloading the loading the rug in my RAV4. Strongly recommend, no issues with the rug, it was beautiful. Photo attached. Any marks on the rug are from 3 and 5 year old grandchildren playing on it!!

I took our rug to Zeytounuan Rugs for cleaning after watching their short video. The rug is gold and ivory, and one foot on either side of the rug was dark brown from dirt. When I left it with Anthony I was hopeful that I may see some color where the walking paths were. Eight days after leaving the rug Anthony called to say the rug was ready for collection. I took it home and opened what looked like a new rug! The colors were bright and it is so, so very clean. You could never tell the rug is 20 years old. So happy!

Zeytounian Rugs did a great job repairing and cleaning a Turkish rug I’ve had since I was a teenager. The corner has been chewed and damaged by my dog many years ago, but they fixed it right up.
