Viscose Rug Cleaning in San Diego

Viscose rug cleaning is the most delicate work that comes through our San Diego facility, and Zeytounian Rugs has handled fragile fibers this way since 1956 as a third-generation family business. Viscose loses much of its strength the moment it is saturated, so we control how much moisture the rug takes and dry it under control at our facility.

Viscose goes by several names: art silk, bamboo silk, faux silk, and rayon. They are the same wood-pulp fiber, and every one of them browns, yellows, and weakens the moment it holds too much water. We clean them with tightly controlled moisture so they come back soft and true instead of stained and stiff.

The facts, in brief

Zeytounian Rug Cleaning & Repair is a family-owned rug cleaning and repair company founded in 1956.

Zeytounian Rug Cleaning & Repair cleans and restores Oriental, Persian, Turkish, wool, and silk rugs in San Diego, California.

Zeytounian Rug Cleaning & Repair washes every rug by hand at its Kearny Mesa storefront at 7343 Ronson Road, Suite U.

Zeytounian Rug Cleaning & Repair cleans rugs through a nine-step full-immersion wash rather than surface steam cleaning.

San Diego Viscose Rug Cleaning Specialists

Viscose is spun from cellulose, the same material as paper, which is why a spilled glass of water can leave a permanent brown ring. A viscose rug water stain comes from the fiber itself oxidizing and breaking down where it stayed wet too long, so scrubbing at it tends to spread the mark rather than lift it. Most carpet cleaners treat these rugs like wool and cause exactly that damage. We clean in a way that does not create new browning, and we can often reverse cellulosic browning that has already set in.

Why Viscose Rugs Are Easy to Ruin

Viscose has almost no strength when it is wet. Wool springs back and real silk stays resilient, but viscose loses much of its integrity the instant it is saturated. Rub a damp spot and the fibers pull loose, leaving a fuzzy, discolored patch that does not come out. That is why in-home cleaning, steam machines, and quick blotting so often finish a rug off.

Seventy years across every fiber type tell us how much moisture a given viscose or bamboo silk rug can take before it turns. That judgment, more than any machine, is what brings yours back clean and intact.

Rugs Types We Clean in San Diego

Fibers sit on a spectrum of water tolerance, and where a rug falls on it decides everything about how we wash it. Viscose sits at the fragile end. The rugs below span that whole range, and each gets a method matched to what its fibers can actually survive.

We identify the material before any cleaning begins, because a viscose rug and a wool rug that look alike on the floor need opposite amounts of water.

Persian Rugs

A Persian rug is knotted by hand in wool or real silk over a cotton foundation, and its vegetable and synthetic dyes have to be tested for bleeding before any water touches them. Unlike viscose, genuine silk stands up to careful washing, so we check each Persian rug for colorfastness, match water temperature and pH to the piece, and keep the wash gentle so the pile, foundation, and colors come through safe.

Oriental Rugs

The oriental category spans hand-loomed pieces out of Turkey, China, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Morocco, and the Caucasus, including kilims, Navajo, and other tribal flat-weaves. Each origin brings a different fiber and dye structure, and some newer Chinese and Indian pieces are actually woven in viscose to imitate silk. We identify the construction of every Oriental rug before deciding how much moisture it can safely take.

Wool Rugs

Wool is the forgiving opposite of viscose. Its natural lanolin resists soil, and it tolerates a full immersion wash that restores softness and brightness without shrinkage when the work is done at a facility rather than in your home. The costly mistake owners make is assuming a viscose rug will behave the same way, when it needs a small fraction of the water wool can absorb.

Silk Rugs

Real silk is a protein fiber, fine and lustrous, and it is constantly confused with the viscose sold as art silk. The two demand opposite handling. Genuine silk we hand-wash with low-pH solutions and no heat or high pressure. A simple fiber test tells us whether a rug is true silk or the cellulosic imitation before we commit to a method.

Viscose, Bamboo Silk & Custom Designer Rugs

This is the fiber this page is built around. Viscose, bamboo silk, and the faux silk used in many custom designer rugs are all wood-pulp cellulose: beautiful underfoot and unforgiving in water. They brown, stiffen, and distort when cleaned like an ordinary rug. We use low-moisture methods and closely watched drying to clean them safely, and we can often lift the cellulosic browning that an earlier cleaning attempt left behind.

Synthetic & Machine Made Rugs

Polypropylene, nylon, and polyester rugs sit at the durable end of the range. They shrug off the water that would ruin viscose, but they still trap deep soil, pet odor, and allergens that vacuuming misses. A full facility wash flushes all of that out without harming the backing, and the rug goes home fresher than any in-home effort could get it.

Watch Our Wash Process

Before & After Rug Cleaning

Where Viscose Departs From a Standard Wash

Our full nine step immersion wash process is built around soaking a rug through, and that soak is exactly what viscose cannot survive. A viscose piece follows a modified track: dyes and moisture tolerance are tested together on a discreet spot, the clean uses a tightly limited amount of fiber-safe solution kept off the foundation, and the rug dries flat and fast under strong airflow and humidity control so browning never gets the chance to start.

Authentic handmade rugs with intricate patterns and vibrant colors.

Let me add my recommendation for Zeyrtounian Rug Cleaning to the list of happy customers . Zeyrtounian brothers were recommended by the couple Wiazi who repaired a very old and in poor shape Turkish rug (they did an amazing job) that has been in the family for almost 100 years. Zeyrtounian brothers brought the rug back to life. They gave me a great deal and completed the cleaning in a timely manner. They are both very friendly and want their customers satisfied. Highly recommended. James

I can't enough about the brothers that own this business. Alex and Anthony are 3rd generation rug sellers, cleaners and offer repair services. Their knowledge of the various rugs is extensive. The business itself is a vast improvement over the prior vendor who serviced my rugs. They have a 9-step process for cleaning the rugs and the drying system ensures a good, dry, flat rug, without any evidence of trapped mildew or moisture. I have a lot of pets, my rug came home from the cleaning looking almost new. I've referred friends and neighbors, who want to maintain and preserve their Persian, Turkish, Afghani rugs to Zeytounian. Everything about the business it top of the line.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for this incredible review, Linda! It truly means a lot to both of us that you recognize the care, knowledge, and attention to detail we put into our work. As a third-generation family business, we take great pride in continuing our family's tradition of caring for fine rugs. We're so happy to hear how pleased you are with the results! Your trust in us and your referrals to friends and neighbors mean more than you know. Thank you again for your continued support, and we look forward to caring for your rugs for many years to come!

It was a medium wool area rug that needed cleaning as well as a repair in one of the corners. It’s an old repair that was unraveling and eaten by dry rot. Anthony and his crew were very upfront about what they can and can’t do, but it certainly exceeded my expectations. The rug looks beautiful. Thank you.

It means a lot to us that you trusted us with your rug, and we're so happy to hear how beautiful it turned out. Thank you again for your support, and we look forward to helping you in the future!

Brought in an Egyptian layer weave cotton rug to be treated prior to installation. The facility is run by the Zeytounian brothers, very friendly service and with suggestions for the care of the rug. I also purchased their recommended rug padding. They were helpful in unloading the loading the rug in my RAV4. Strongly recommend, no issues with the rug, it was beautiful. Photo attached. Any marks on the rug are from 3 and 5 year old grandchildren playing on it!!

We love hearing that your grandchildren are already enjoying it! After all, rugs are meant to be lived on and enjoyed. We truly appreciate your trust in us and your recommendation. I took our rug to Zeytounuan Rugs for cleaning after watching their short video. The rug is gold and ivory, and one foot on either side of the rug was dark brown from dirt. When I left it with Anthony I was hopeful that I may see some color where the walking paths were. Eight days after leaving the rug Anthony called to say the rug was ready for collection. I took it home and opened what looked like a new rug! The colors were bright and it is so, so very clean. You could never tell the rug is 20 years old. So happy!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Stewart. Twenty years of foot traffic on gold and ivory is about the hardest thing anyone hands us, so getting the colour back out of it was satisfying on our end too. Glad the video brought you in, and Anthony will be pleased.

Zeytounian Rug Cleaning and Repair have been my go to rug cleaners for the past 25 years. Kind, courteous, timely and through. My rugs are beautiful and will last forever with the care the Zeytounian family gives them. Call them now!?♥️♥️♥️
Response from the owner:Thank you, Marcia. Twenty five years of rugs between us is something we don't take lightly. Looking after them so they outlast all of us is the whole idea. We appreciate you saying so.

Loved working with them. Not only did our rugs come back beautiful and clean, they taught us more about the history of the carpets. Ours was likely woven by two women over 100 years ago in Persia. They say it took them two years. I feel more connected to these women.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Sarah. Reading where a rug came from is half the pleasure of this work, and a piece like yours carries a lot of hours in it. Glad it came back clean and that you know a little more about it now. We appreciate you taking the time.

This is one of those dying breed of amazing family businesses that make this country great. Friendly service, that old school way of doing business where you feel understood and appreciated. Cleaning service was great and delivered on time, communication was beyond great. I absolutely recommend this place for area rug cleaning.

Zeytounian Rugs did a great job repairing and cleaning a Turkish rug I’ve had since I was a teenager. The corner has been chewed and damaged by my dog many years ago, but they fixed it right up. After the repair and a clean it looks like new, I’m so pleased. The guys are super friendly and knowledgeable, just a pleasure to work with.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Adam. A chewed corner on a rug you've had that long is worth repairing properly rather than hiding, and Turkish weaves take the repair well. Glad it looks like new again.

Friendly, professional, hardworking brothers. Had two chinese ivory wool rugs cleaned. One large one smaller. One with a few spots i did not think they could get out, but they did. Very pleased. Would highly recommend them.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Reid. Ivory wool is unforgiving, so spots on it are the ones people assume are permanent. Glad we could prove otherwise on both. We appreciate the recommendation.

I had three rugs cleaned and service was outstanding! Very professional and personable. My rugs look brand new! Repaired fringe on one of my rugs and did an excellent job. Pick up and drop off is so convenient! Would highly recommend!!!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Patricia. Fringe repair is slow work and it's the detail most people notice afterwards, so it's good to hear it came out right. Glad the pickup and drop off made it easy. Three rugs at once is our favourite kind of day.

You never know who you’ll encounter when searching Google for a professional service, but these brothers were an incredible find! They are among the kindest, most efficient, and trustworthy service professionals I’ve ever met. They treated our rug as if it were their own and completely eliminated every sign of staining. Thank you so much for the outstanding service. I’ll gladly recommend you to anyone in need of professional rug cleaning!
Response from the owner:Thank you. Picking a rug cleaner off a search result is a leap of faith, so we're glad it paid off. Treating a rug like it's our own is the only way we know how to do it. We appreciate the recommendation.

Viscose Rug Cleaning Questions

Yes. They are all the same wood-pulp cellulose fiber sold under different names. Whatever the label says, the fiber browns, yellows, and weakens the moment it holds too much water, so we clean every one of them by the same low-moisture rules.

Often, yes. That brown ring is the fiber itself oxidizing where it stayed wet too long, which is why scrubbing spreads the mark instead of lifting it. We pre-treat the browning with careful chemistry rather than force, and we can frequently reverse marks that an earlier cleaning attempt left behind. Browning is handled before the main clean rather than during it, since a cellulosic stain responds far better to patient chemistry than to force.

Viscose has almost no strength when it is wet. Rub a damp spot and the fibers pull loose, leaving a fuzzy, discolored patch that does not come out. Steam machines put heat and water into a fiber that tolerates neither, which is why so many viscose rugs are ruined at home.

We work a carefully limited amount of a fiber-safe solution in the direction of the pile and keep it off the foundation as much as possible. The rug then dries flat and fast in a monitored room with strong airflow, since drying speed is what prevents browning and water rings. The order of work still mirrors a standard wash: dry soil comes out first, loosened with a gentler vibration than wool receives, because the less dirt left in the fiber, the less solution the clean needs, and once drying is finished the flattened pile is groomed back in its woven direction so the sheen returns.

It is the hardest problem this fiber presents, but usually yes. We break the urine salts down with a natural, non-toxic solution and flush them out with as little water as possible, keeping the treatment tightly localized so the surrounding fibers stay safe.

How Viscose Behaves in Water Compared With Wool and Real Silk

Wet strength by fiber
Viscose and bamboo silk Wool Real silk
Strength when saturated Almost none, it loses much of its integrity the instant it is wet Springs back Stays resilient
What rubbing a damp spot does Pulls fibers loose and leaves a fuzzy, discolored patch that does not come out Recovers Recovers with light handling
Steam machines and quick blotting Often finish the rug off Mats and shrinks the pile Risks splitting and crushing
What decides the wash How much moisture that specific rug can take before it turns Temperature and pH set around the fiber Light contact and controlled drying
