Fine La Jolla Rugs, Washed by Hand

A rug from a Muirlands hillside house gets the same work as one from a condo near the Cove. Brian brought us a silk and wool rug after his dog knocked over an ink bottle, and it came back without the stain. Sada inherited three Persian rugs, seventy or eighty years old and never washed, and one had been chewed through, so it went to the repair bench before it touched water. Paul just wanted his rug carried back out to the car when it was done, which we did. Heirloom repair one week, a pet disaster the next, an ordinary drop-off after that, all handled by hand at one facility.

Age is the other constant here. The Village grew up in the 1910s and 1920s, when Ellen Browning Scripps was commissioning Irving Gill to design landmarks like the La Jolla Woman’s Club, and houses from that era are still standing, still furnished with rugs bought generations ago. A rug that has lived that long in one family deserves dye testing and a hand wash, not a rented steam machine.

What the Marine Layer Does to La Jolla Rugs

La Jolla homes range from 1920s Spanish and cottage builds near the Village to mid-century and newer houses on the narrow roads that climb the Muirlands and Mount Soledad, and nearly all of them sit close to the seven miles of Pacific coastline that give the neighborhood its shape. For wool and silk, that proximity is the catch. The summer marine layer keeps humidity pressed against the pile for months, and a rug that stays faintly damp under a bed or a heavy sofa becomes prime ground for clothes moths to lay eggs. The worst of it turns up in wool rugs in quiet rooms, where nothing disturbs the fibers and the larvae feed through a whole season before anyone spots a bare patch.

Salt is the second problem. It dulls natural dyes over the years and drives fine grit into the foundation that household vacuuming never lifts. Along the bluffs at Bird Rock and the beach flats at La Jolla Shores, that exposure never lets up. Viscose and bamboo-silk rugs, which appear constantly in La Jolla design projects, handle it the worst and can brown or stiffen when coastal damp wicks up through the fibers. Often, yes. The coastal water lines and the brown marks that form when viscose or silk stays damp can usually be reduced or removed once the rug is properly washed and dried under controlled conditions. We look at it closely at pickup and tell you honestly what to expect.

They gave me a reasonable estimate for a wool rug. It was almost not worth it, seeing as I got it originally off Article, but better to not waste, right? They cleaned it then held it for me for a month while the room it was in was renovated (your mileage may vary). There was a damaged corner (dogs!!) that was too expensive to fully repair so the good fellow there sewed it up to at least protect it from unraveling. All the above and they are SO NICE. Also explained some differences to me between different rug weaves. They are ALL IN on rugs. Amazing stuff.

Fantastic Job! We have a 8’ diameter circular asian rug that ’s 40 years old. It was dirty and the fringe was torn off from vacuuming. We took it to Zeytourian Rugs for cleaning & restoration. The company provided both pick-up and delivery which was a big help to me. The rugs really needed cleaning because it had been some time since they were last cleaned.
